One tall wall or two shorter tiers. Both are common on sloping Baldivis blocks.

Typical Baldivis retaining wall jobs

Much of Baldivis is newer housing on sandy, sloping lots. These are the jobs that come up again and again.

  • Levelling a sloping backyard

Many Baldivis blocks fall from front to back or side to side. A wall or two can turn that slope into a usable lawn, patio or shed pad.

  • Working with an existing estate wall

Plenty of lots came with retaining walls built by the developer. Adding height, a fence or a slab near them needs care, as they were built for a set load.

  • Walls around a new pool

Pool digs leave spare sand and often a level change. Walls here have to suit the pool, its paving and the safety barrier.

  • Side paths and bin areas

Narrow walls along the side of the house to keep a flat, firm path for bins, gates and access. Sleepers are a common pick where space is tight.

Fences on top of retaining walls

A lot of Baldivis boundary walls end up with a fence on top. That fence catches the wind, and the push it takes ends up on the wall below. A wall built only to hold sand may not be built for that.

If a fence is part of the plan, say so when you ask for a quote. The builder can then allow for it in the wall, the footing and where the fence posts go. If the wall is on a boundary, your neighbour will usually need to be part of the conversation too.

General information only. The builder will work out what your wall needs.

Before you book a wall

A few things worth sorting out first. They also help the builder give you a quote that holds up.

Who built the existing walls?
If your block came with estate walls, find out what they are and what sits on them. Your settlement papers or the builder of your house may have details.
Talk to your neighbour early
If a wall or fence runs along a boundary, the neighbour has a stake in it. A quick chat before anything is booked avoids most problems.
Find out what's underground
Water, power and gas lines run through newer estates. A free Before You Dig Australia enquiry shows what's mapped near you.
Plan for the sand you move
Cutting into a slope makes spare sand. Filling a low side needs sand brought in. Both affect the quote, so mention them.

Council approval in Baldivis

Walls over a certain height usually need council approval. Boundary walls, and walls holding up a fence, driveway, pool or building, can bring in extra requirements and sometimes an engineer.

Baldivis is in the City of Rockingham. Check with the City of Rockingham before work starts. The builder who quotes can usually tell you what they expect will be needed.

Baldivis retaining wall questions

Can I put a fence on top of a retaining wall in Baldivis?

Often, yes, but it has to be planned for. A fence adds load, mostly from wind, so the wall and its footing need to allow for it. A fence on a boundary also involves your neighbour. Mention any fence plans when you ask for a quote.

My block already has an estate retaining wall. Can I build on it or next to it?

Possibly. Existing walls were built for a certain load. Adding height, a fence, a slab or a pool close by can change that. A builder will need to look at it first, and the City of Rockingham may need to be involved.

Do I need approval from the City of Rockingham?

Walls over a certain height usually need council approval, and boundary walls can have extra rules. Check with the City of Rockingham before work starts. The builder who quotes can usually tell you what they expect will be needed.

What is a tiered retaining wall?

Two or more shorter walls stepped back from each other, with a garden bed between them, instead of one tall wall. It can soften a big level change and leave room for planting, but it needs more space front to back.

Should the retaining walls go in before or after the pool?

Plan them together. A pool dig leaves a lot of spare sand, and walls near a pool may need to allow for the pool and its safety barrier. Talking to both builders early can save doing work twice.
